2026 Call for Board of Director Nominations

The Avalanche Canada Foundation (ACF) is a registered charitable organization dedicated to advancing public avalanche safety in Canada by securing and stewarding philanthropic support for Avalanche Canada (AvCan). Through its fundraising and grant-making activities, the Foundation plays a critical role in enabling programs that reduce avalanche-related injuries and fatalities.

ACF supports a range of high-impact initiatives, including youth education, community outreach, research, and public safety programs that benefit backcountry users across the country. Working in close alignment with Avalanche Canada, the Foundation ensures that charitable contributions are directed toward initiatives that deliver measurable safety outcomes and national impact.

The Foundation is currently seeking qualified individuals to join its Board of Directors, with particular interest in candidates who bring expertise in:

  1. Marketing, communications and branding – Provides governance-level guidance on brand, communications and marketing strategy to strengthen stakeholder engagement, reputation, and ACF’s impact.

  2. Snowmobile community engagement – with strong connections to and understanding of the snowmobiling community and its role in avalanche safety.

About the Opportunity

The ACF Board of Directors provides strategic leadership and governance oversight to the organization. The Board is responsible for setting the Foundation’s strategic direction, establishing governance and operational policies, and overseeing the Executive Director, who is accountable for implementing these policies and managing day-to-day operations.

Board Directors are unpaid volunteer positions, appointed for an initial three-year term, with many Directors serving additional terms. Directors are expected to be active and engaged contributors to the work of the Board.

Directors typically commit 4–8 hours per month, including:

  • Preparation for and participation in Board and committee meetings

  • Participation in Board planning sessions

  • Attendance at special events

  • Active involvement in at least one Board committee

Occasional travel is required for biannual planning sessions, meetings, and key events.

Desired Qualifications and Areas of Expertise

We are seeking individuals who are passionate about advancing public avalanche safety in Canada and supporting the diverse winter backcountry community served by Avalanche Canada.

We are currently prioritizing candidates with expertise in the following areas:

1. Marketing, Communications and Branding

Directors in this area will support the Board and ACF Executive Director in shaping and executing strategies that strengthen the Avalanche Canada brand and grow philanthropic support.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide strategic oversight and guidance on long-term brand, marketing, and communications strategy to advance ACF’s mission, visibility, and public trust.

  • Champion integrated marketing and fundraising initiatives, advising on campaign and audience strategy, and performance to drive sustainable donor growth and engagement.

  • Apply market intelligence and donor analytics to inform acquisition, loyalty, and retention strategies.

  • Ensure marketing effectiveness by overseeing consistency, clarity, and impact across all communication channels, platforms, and stakeholder touchpoints.

  • Serve as a strategic thought partner to Avalanche Canada’s executive, operational, and creative teams, providing counsel on integrated marketing, digital channels, and emerging best practices.

Profile:

  • Experience: 10+ years in brand marketing, communications, advertising, or related fields.

  • Skills: Strategic thinking, digital media expertise, CRM, analytical capability, creativity, and strong communication skills.

2. Snowmobile Community Engagement

Directors in this area will help strengthen relationships with the snowmobiling community and expand ACF’s reach within this important user group.

Responsibilities include:

  • Building and maintaining relationships with snowmobile stakeholders, clubs, and industry partners

  • Supporting initiatives that increase engagement and donor participation within the snowmobiling community

  • Providing insight into market dynamics, culture, and trends

Profile:

  • Experience: 5+ years in snowmobile industry, retail, marketing, or club leadership

  • Skills: Relationship-building, collaboration, strategic thinking, and community engagement

About Avalanche Canada Foundation

The Avalanche Canada Foundation is a federally registered charity (#86900 0349 RR0001) dedicated to supporting public avalanche safety in Canada. The Foundation raises and stewards funds to support Avalanche Canada’s work in forecasting, education, research, and prevention.

Avalanche Canada is a national, non-government, not-for-profit organization responsible for delivering public avalanche safety services across Canada. It provides daily avalanche forecasts throughout the winter for much of western Canada and Newfoundland, free of charge via its website and mobile app. It also leads avalanche awareness and education programs, supports training providers, serves as a central hub for avalanche information, and collaborates on research initiatives in Canada and internationally.

The ACF Board provides governance oversight of the Foundation’s endowment(s), financial investments, designated funds, and fundraising operations, ensuring that charitable resources are effectively deployed to maximize public safety outcomes.

Compensation

Board Directors are unpaid volunteers. Reasonable, pre-approved expenses incurred in the performance of Board duties are reimbursed in accordance with applicable policies.

Shortlisted candidates may be asked to provide additional materials and must be eligible to serve as a Director in Canada. A criminal background check will be required prior to appointment.

Successful candidates must be voted in by ACF Membership at the next Annual General Meeting of the corporation to be scheduled in October, 2026.
